Samyang Roundsquare, the Korea-based food and healthcare arm of Samyang America, has launched Spindle, a metabolic health brand whose debut SKU centers on a single active ingredient: Akkermansia MYO™, a pasteurized, heat-stabilized postbiotic derived from Akkermansia muciniphila. The move marks one of the more commercially deliberate entries into the gut–muscle axis category, an emerging functional nutrition segment drawing growing ingredient-supplier interest.

The Core Ingredient

Akkermansia MYO™ is a non-live, pasteurized postbiotic, distinguishing it technically from conventional probiotic strains that require cold-chain handling and live-cell viability claims. The heat-stabilization process yields a shelf-stable format with a stated two-year shelf life without refrigeration — a meaningful supply-chain and co-manufacturer advantage for brands evaluating toll manufacturing or contract manufacturing partnerships in the functional supplement space. The ingredient carries an FDA-reviewed New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) notification, providing a regulatory pathway that brand customers and co-manufacturers will require before listing on specification sheets and submitting to retail buyers.

Formulation credentials include a gluten-free, non-GMO declaration and an allergen statement confirming the product is free from egg, soy, wheat, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. Production occurs in a GMP-certified facility. Certificate of analysis (COA) and technical data sheet (TDS) availability were not detailed in the launch materials, but would be standard expectations for any ingredient customer evaluating Akkermansia MYO™ for white-label or co-manufactured applications.

Clinical Evidence and Market Positioning

The ingredient has been evaluated in a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in adults aged 60 to 80. Published data (Kang et al., Nutrients, 2024) and additional third-party data on file report a 10.4% increase in hamstring strength versus control, a 14.1% increase in muscle power versus control, a 5.0 percentage-point improvement in grip strength, a 5.6 percentage-point increase in prealbumin — a recognized biomarker for muscle maintenance and repair — and a 37.8 percentage-point reduction in myostatin, the signaling protein that suppresses muscle growth when chronically elevated. The study population was predominantly women, a demographic detail that downstream brand customers should factor into label substantiation and marketing claims.

"The clinical research behind Akkermansia MYO™ gave us the evidence we needed to bring that science into a product people can trust," said Ahjin Kim, Head of R&D at Samyang Healthcare. "Spindle Muscle+ reflects our commitment to formulating from data, not assumptions."

The brand is explicitly positioning Spindle Muscle+ for adults using GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, a rapidly expanding consumer cohort documented to experience accelerated lean muscle loss during pharmacologically assisted weight reduction. That application context aligns with broader functional protein and muscle-health ingredient trends that ingredient suppliers are already mapping against the GLP-1 adjacency opportunity.

Supply and Regulatory Context

Samyang Roundsquare's entry into the U.S. postbiotic market reflects the broader commercialization arc for Akkermansia muciniphila-derived ingredients, which moved from academic microbiome research into regulated dietary supplement channels following the landmark Depommier et al. study (Nature Medicine, 2019) on pasteurized Akkermansia in metabolic syndrome patients. The NDI designation is a key differentiator; without it, formulators and sports and active-nutrition brands would face significant regulatory exposure under 21 CFR Part 190.

Capacity figures, minimum order quantities (MOQ), and bulk pricing for Akkermansia MYO™ as a standalone ingredient were not disclosed at launch. Ingredient buyers interested in licensing or supply agreements would need to engage Samyang America directly through us.spindle.bio.
