Angel Yeast, a Shanghai-listed biotech company, is leveraging four decades of fermentation expertise to expand its portfolio of yeast-derived ingredients and manufacturing footprint globally. In a recent interview with Food Ingredients trade publication, Chairman Xiong Tao outlined the company's trajectory from traditional yeast production to advanced biotech applications. The company now operates in yeast extracts—used as natural flavoring solutions—and Angeopro yeast protein, which contains more than 80% protein and targets nutrition, sports, and specialty dietary applications. "Yeast protein is becoming a new fermented protein source for the nutrition industry," Xiong said. "It is moving toward large-scale application, expanding from traditional sectors such as baking, meat products, and dairy to emerging areas such as sports nutrition, foods for special medical purposes, and vegan foods." To strengthen regional responsiveness, Angel Yeast has established an R&D center in Belgium to develop products for European customers and is building a manufacturing facility in Indonesia to serve South Asian markets. The company applies a "localizing for the local market" strategy, bringing supply chains closer to customers while supporting local employment and industrial development. Sustainability has become a core operational focus. In 2025, Angel Yeast earned an EcoVadis Silver rating, placing it among the top 15% of assessed organizations globally. The company operates a circular production model in which agricultural byproducts are returned to farming through value-added applications. It has also integrated renewable energy—solar and biomass—and established full life-cycle carbon footprint management. Xiong credited innovation and talent retention as critical growth drivers. "Innovation has always been at the heart of Angel Yeast's growth," he said. "We will continue to strengthen our global manufacturing and R&D network, deepen our understanding of local markets, and invest in the capabilities needed to serve customers around the world." **Why It Matters:** As plant-based and alternative protein categories accelerate globally, yeast-derived proteins offer food makers a fermented, scalable ingredient option. Angel Yeast's regional manufacturing expansion and R&D localization signal competitive positioning in markets where customization and supply chain proximity drive purchasing decisions.
